Swanage Jazz Festival is run by a group of fans who aim to present a selection of the best and most creative bands and musicians playing jazz in Britain. Unlike most jazz festivals, Swanage Jazz Festival books a variety of jazz styles, from New Orleans to contemporary sounds, with the balance toward the modern end of the spectrum. They book many leading names, whilst aiming to give supporters access to the music of younger musicians who have recently graduated from the conservatoires (or who are still there).

Swanage Jazz Festival is a family friendly event: children under 16 are admitted free with a ticket-holding adult. They also encourage student participation, offering tickets at half price and giving stage space to five bands from colleges and schools who all have complimentary tickets.
