John Woolrich: The Composers’ Fund

John Woolrich’s music has been performed throughout the world. His commissions include pieces for the Philharmonia, the London Sinfonietta, the Academy of St Martin  in the Fields and the Proms. John Woolrich is Artist-in Association with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and has been artistic Director of both the Aldeburgh Festival and Dartington Summer School. Until recently he was Professor of Music at Brunel University

Over the next two years I plan to concentrate on an ambitious project to compose a set of six linked string quartets. there is interest in this project from Aldeburgh, the Royal Academy of Music, the BBC and Birmingham and Southampton universities. Several UK groups (principally the Callino and Benyounes quartets) are involved and there is international interest from quartets in Canada, the Netherlands, Germany and the USA. There is a research  element connected to the project, led by the Psychology Department at Birmingham University, exploring coordination and leadership in string quartets.
