In January 2014 The Opera Group and Mahogany Opera joined forces to become Mahogany Opera Group – bringing together 25 years’ experience of pioneering approaches to commissioning and producing contemporary opera. We create new opera in new ways, in different spaces and places throughout the UK and internationally, blurring the boundaries of what opera is and who it is for. We collaborate with established and emerging artists, drawing on a range of cultural influences, theatrical methods, art-forms and technologies.

One of the defining characteristics of Mahogany Opera Group will be how we develop new ideas and how we develop the artists who will create and deliver those ideas.

INTEGRATE is our new Research and Development programme supported by PRS for Music Foundation. The activity will consist of a series of workshops throughout the year to develop the work of four young British composers; Emily Howard, Jamie Man, Ergo Phizmiz and Laurence Osborn. These workshops will allow focused collaboration between each composer and a variety of other artists; librettists, instrumentalists and other collaborators to inspire their practice.

INTEGRATE will culminate in our VARIOUS STAGES R&D Festival in January 2015, which will throw the work open to a wider audience. This part of the process will build creative exchanges between artists and partner organisations (venues, festivals, funders) into the development of the work, helping its journey to a fully formed commission and creating opera that speaks directly to an audience.
