Martin Batchelar is a London-based composer of music for film.

In 2010 Martin was awarded the European Talent Award for ‘Best Filmscore’ at the annual Soundtrack Cologne Festival, and has been invited to record his next score with the WDR Radio Orchestra at their studios in Cologne later this year.

Academy Award-winning composer Jan A. P. Kaczmarek (Finding Neverland – 2004, Get Low – 2009) was the head of the international jury, expressly praising Martin for his “exceptional craft, orchestration and memorable themes.”

Martin gained a scholarship to study for a Masters in Composition for Screen at the Royal College of Music in 2009. Studying Film Music Composition with Vasco Hexel and Orchestration with Ken Hesketh, he was awarded the prestigious Joseph Horovitz Prize for Composition for Screen in 2010.

Shoot The Runner Films‘ Abducted won The National Sci-Fi London 48 Hour Film Challenge 2010, with Martin’s score commended by the panel, which included director Vincenzo Natali (Splice – 2009).

Martin recently worked with Reckless Entertainment through ITV Studios on Coronation Street: The Album. In Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the soap, the cast joined with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to record the newly commissioned musical. Martin was musical assistant to Rupert Christie and Trisha Ward, including score preparation and vocal conducting assistant.

As a pianist and percussionist, Martin was classically trained from a young age. Having always been passionate about film music, his degree in Music Production at Leeds College of Music allowed him to develop his compositional technique, whilst also further exploring jazz and pop.
