Anxiety Fanfare and Variations for Voices is a new commission by the Mental Health Foundation for Jocelyn Pook to compose a new contemporary classical work for the Anxiety Arts Festival London 2014. The commission is an innovative take on the musical forms of the fanfare and variations that will be written for voices rather than the traditional brass instruments. Pook will use the piece to explore a range of anxious emotions using the stories and voices of people who have experienced mental illness – from fear, panic, phobic states to desire and anticipation. The final commission will be orchestrated for a small ensemble and sung by a community choir of voices made up of people who have experienced mental illness and NHS professionals alongside four professional soloists. Pook’s new commission, will be 18 minutes duration, and will be an integral piece is a highlight within our Anxiety and Modernity concert programme curated in partnership with the Wigmore Hall alongside composers such as Schoenberg, Shostakovich, Webern and Messiaen. The World Première of the Anxiety Fanfare will be performed with the Aurora Orchestra at the Wigmore Hall on 12 June 2014. The work will tour to the Folkestone Fringe Festival, and Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival Glasgow.
