Commissioned by:

Liverpool Biennial

Event date:

July 2014

Event venue:

Liverpool Cathedral

Liverpool Biennial and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic have commissioned Michael Nyman to write a new symphony to be premiered in July 2014 for the opening weekend of Liverpool Biennial 2014 (5 July – 26 October).

For this commission Nyman will revisit themes that he has been working with over the past 30 years, exploring ideas of commemoration and memory.

The new piece will be performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Liverpool Philharmonic youth and children’s choirs at Liverpool Cathedral.

Michael Nyman is one of Britain’s most innovative and celebrated composers of contemporary music. He has worked all his life in new music across many different genres; his work encompasses operas and string quartets, film soundtracks and orchestral concertos. Far more than merely a composer, he’s also a performer, conductor, bandleader, pianist, author, musicologist and now a photographer and filmmaker.
