Speech Debelle: Momentum

In 2009, Speech Debelle kicked in the music industry’s backdoor waving her vulnerably introspective debut album, Speech Therapy, which won the Mercury Music Prize for British album of the year after beating the likes of Florence and the Machine, Kasabian and La Roux for the prestigious award.

Her Kwes-produced sophomore album, Freedom Of Speech (2012), commanded further critical acclaim [“One of the sturdiest, most rounded hip hop albums to emerge from these shores” -MOJO] while expanding Speech’s captivating flair for poetic testimonies, playful narratives, and dynamic rumination on power, politics and pleasure.

Real life soon came knocking for her attention and she stepped away from music for several years to grow and concentrate on her other passions. Her zeal for cooking came to the forefront when she tantalised the nation with her inventive recipes as a semi-finalist on Celebrity Masterchef, while her socially conscious drive lead her to curate a moving exhibition of art by prisoners for the Koestler Trust’s The Strength and Vulnerability Bunker at London’s iconic Southbank Centre in 2013.

Now re-emerging with renewed vigour and an evolved outlook, the outspoken South London lyricist prepares to release her third full length offering, Tantil Before I Breathe. Speech returns with the opening single The Work — a radiant, affirming song that speaks on strength while embarking on a crucial mental, physical, emotional and spiritual journey.

The Momentum Fund will help support the release of Speech’s third album Tantil Before I Breathe.
