THUMPERS: Momentum
Momentum Music Fund Recipient 2013
THUMPERS are comprised of long time friends Marcus Pepperell and John Hamson Jr. – their colourful, exuberant alt-pop celebrates their innate musical kinship and shared memories from their childhood.
Their jubilant debut single Dancing’s Done was released through paradYse Records and Kissability in February this year. Their debut EP Unkinder was released as a limited 12” vinyl on June 3rd through Transgressive Records.
THUMPERS‘ last single Unkinder (A Tougher Love) was Record of the Week on Phil & Alice‘s Radio 1 show, received plays from Zane Lowe and Sara Cox and was added to the BBC 6Music B-list.
Based in London, the duo decamp to their Warwickshire hometown to write and produce all of their music where, true to the band’s tight-knitted collaborative vision, additional vocals are provided by Pepperell‘s sisters. These lush harmonies are interwoven with astral synths and emphatic rhythms to create their heady blend of modern pop.
Though Pepperell (vocals, guitar, keys) and Hamson Jr. (drums, vocals, bass) produce the majority of their music themselves, they have recently worked with David Kosten (Bat for Lashes, Everything Everything) who lends additional production and his mix skills to Unkinder (A Tougher Love).
Live, they are augmented by an interchanging cast of friends and musicians in faithfully bringing their immersive dynamics and grand-scale sonic vision to the stage. The ensemble cast have recorded a Radio 1 Maida Vale session for Huw Stephens and performed a stripped-back session for Lauren Laverne‘s 6Music show in June.
THUMPERS have finished their debut album with David Kosten and will be playing a string of festivals this summer including Reading and Leeds, before supporting Everything Everything and CHVRCHES across the UK and Europe in October.
Activity
THUMPERS will use their grant from the Momentum Music Fund for the release and promotion of new single Sound of Screams and as a way to maximise the impact of a busy Autumn schedule of accompanying live shows, including a full UK support tour with Chvrches in October 2013.
“We’re over the moon to be supported and recognised by PRS for Music Foundation and the Momentum Music Fund and excited we’re able to tour and get music out there seamlessly. It’s great English artists are now being supported at crucial stages of their development, something that’s worked so well for great Canadian musicians for many years.” – THUMPERS
