Nicola Renshaw is a Manchester based composer and arranger of music to screen and concert hall. She studied bassoon at Chetham’s School of Music and in 2006 became a finalist for BBC New Talent’s TV Composers Scheme. Nicola graduated with a Masters in Composition from Salford University in 2010 during which time her debut work for brass band ‘Galway Belle’ was published by Kirklees Music and recorded by The Black Dyke Band. Nicola’s most recent work ‘Y Seren Ddawns’ (The Dancing Star) was commissioned in 2013 by Werneth Concert Band supported by Arts Council England and has received premieres in both Manchester and Lisbon.

‘Y Seren Ddawns’ is Nicola’s debut wind band composition and, to date, her largest work. It mirrors the chronicles of two pairs of lovers from the play Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare and explores the concept of new beginnings in celebration of Werneth Concert Band’s 30th Anniversary. “I am thrilled to be awarded a bursary by Bliss Trust and PRS for Music Foundation to record my latest project. It is always challenging to tackle a new discipline of composition and I feel very privileged that this recording will provide an opportunity for me to reach new audiences and to introduce existing audiences to new music. I am excited to further advance my musical development in this field and couldn’t have hoped for a more promising start.” ‘Y Seren Ddawns’ is scheduled to be recorded at The Sound Company studios, London in the New Year.
