Daniel Kidane ‘Fusion’ Commission for CBSO Youth Orchestra

Inspired by the CBSO’s 2016/17 season theme, The Spirit of England, rising British-Eritrean composer Daniel Kidane has been commissioned to write a new, challenging piece for the company’s acclaimed Youth Orchestra, which will receive its premiere on 26th February 2017.

The piece will be an exciting fusion of traditional orchestral music with the uniquely British urban music genre, Grime. By fusing the two genres Daniel aims to make classical music more accessible for younger audiences and allow the young players to work on a hybrid style that has never been explored in a solely orchestral context before. As Daniel explains: “Having grown up in inner city London, I know the importance of attending orchestral concerts where the music captivates and inspires you as a young listener. This spur is the energy that I wish to emulate in my own piece and the CBSO Youth Orchestra is the perfect vehicle through which to explore this novel genre.”

The CSBO Youth Orchestra is the leading youth orchestra in the Midlands and one of the most ambitious and dynamic ensembles of its type anywhere in the world, giving the orchestral players of tomorrow an experience that’s as close as possible to playing in a professional symphony orchestra. Daniel first received composition lessons at the Royal College of Music, going on to study in St Petersburg before completing his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music. His music has been performed across the UK and abroad and been broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
