The Harmonic Canon is a computer designed 1/2 ton double-bell made by Marcus Vergette.

The Harmonic Canon is also a piece for this instrument composed by Dominic Murcott for American percussion geniuses ‘arx duo’.

The piece will be premiered at The Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2017 then released by Nonclassical Records. To celebrate the continuing joy of vinyl, it will consist of two 21 minutes movements to fit perfectly on a record. Using a huge palette of metal percussion plus the bell itself, one movement will be a single meditative tone that mutates from the tiniest pure frequencies to thunderous white noise via the multiple tones of the bell. The second is a virtuosic display of percussive brilliance, played almost entirely in unison.

Huge church bells are immobile and invisible. The Harmonic Canon can be moved and live in any community. it can be played by anyone. Dominic will be providing community workshops on the bell as the project progresses.

Dominic Murcott is a composer and percussionist who began his career without formal trading then came in from the cold! He writes theatrical pieces with films and performers and is head of a very popular composition department at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
