Writing the Future: Nurturing Today the Composing Voices of Tomorrow
Writing the Future offers exceptional young composers and creators opportunities to develop original work for concert, site-specific and digital platforms. From January 2017 – July 2018, six composers will work directly with the London Sinfonietta musicians who perform their work. The ensemble can claim one of the foremost collections of musicians for new music in the world, as well as a highly experienced production team who can help composers’ realise their ideas. We want to work with those who we believe will become an important part of the world of new music in the next 10 years, and those taking part can expect a high profile in our season. We want to make work together that reflects where new music is now – responding to ideas which may be cross-art form, site specific and involving digital technology, as well as works for the concert hall. There is no better time to do this when the ensemble celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2018. We will both celebrate our past, but critically look to our future.
“London Sinfonietta gave me the opportunity to develop work outside of normal concert models and supported me from the inception of my idea to the performances. As an early-career composer, it was a valuable opportunity to create a large-scale work and collaborate with experienced professionals on the staging, lighting and direction. This was such an incredibly fulfilling
project.” – Samantha Fernando
“Time with musicians – I don’t know who would turn that down” – Mira Calix
