Pioneers of Percussion - Produced by Powerplant

Joby Burgess, the “insanely talented British percussionist” (Chicago Classical Music) is launching Pioneers of Percussion in 2016, a solo recital programme featuring works by the most creative composers of the 20th century including Toru Takemitsu, Iannis Xenakis, Morton Feldman, Arvo Pärt and new works by Nicole Lizée, Linda Buckley and Rebecca Dale. An aluminium harp, a typewriter, a giant steel sheet, loop pedals, an Angolan sheperding instrument, graphic scores, electronics and video will all feature in this revelatory programme from one of contemporary classical’s leading lights.

Pioneers of Percussion opens at the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts on 25 February 2016 before going on to Capstone Theatre Liverpool (15 March 2016). Burgess then tours the programme nationally during 2016/2017 and takes it into the recording studio.

Powerplant is an inspiring collaboration of British artists, comprising Joby Burgess’ percussion, xylosynth and electronics with sound design by Matthew Fairclough and visuals by Kathy Hinde. The collective made its debut in 2005 with a sell-out performance at the Southbank Centre, London, and has since performed extensively throughout the UK, Europe and beyond.
