For:

Recording of Debut Album

Bas Jan is a trio of female musicians made up of Serafina Steer (bass, keyboards and vocals), Jenny Moore (drums) and Sarah Anderson (violin and keyboard). They perform the songs of Steer arranged through a process of collaboration and experimentation that draws on each band member’s specialist background (performance art/composition) as well as the English post punk songwriting tradition.

Steer has been mainly known as a classical/pop harpist and began writing songs in 2006, having released three albums on independent labels. ‘The Moths Are Real’ – produced by Jarvis Cocker  and released by Stolen Recordings Ltd.  was Rough Trade‘s Album of the Month and received high praise from the likes of The Times (4/5), the Sunday Express (5/5), The Guardian (4/5), Loud & Quiet (8/10) and Mojo (4/5).

Bas Jan is a concerted departure from Steer’s usual methods, hence the name. Sarah Anderson was a key member of ‘Chromehoof’ as well as a founder member of the multi disciplinary sound collective ‘Circumstance.’ Jenny Moore is an innovative and diverse visual and performance artist (ex Goldsmith’s) who regularly leads projects at galleries such as Tate and Serpentine.
