Spitalfields Festival Limited T/A Spitalfields Music: The Open Fund for Organisations

After an extended interval, Spitalfields Music Festival is back 1-11 July 2021! The PRS for Music Foundation are supporting commissions by Joe Cutler, Philip Herbert, Zoe Martlew, Howard Skempton, and Alicia Jane Turner which play key parts in the programme. Alicia’s work investigates the queer history of London’s East End, contrasting historic information on Molly Houses with testimony from present day sex workers, set against the changing demographics of the area as gentrification takes hold. Presented in The George Tavern in Whitechapel, the installation provides an intimate view of changing attitudes and circumstances through sound and music.

Bach Rework’d is a new film by Matt Belcher featuring four composer/performers and their stories over the last year under coronavirus restrictions. They will reflect on their love of Bach and what it meant to them during the pandemic, at a time when performing in public was banned, and feature their favourite solo instrumental work by the composer, alongside their personal response performed on their chosen instruments. The film will be shown on demand for remote audiences, and at Genesis Cinema, Whitechapel for those able to join us in person.
