Emily Levy: Women Make Music

A new work by composer Emily Levy and writer Rommi Smith, for internationally renowned baritone Roderick Williams.

The Rain is Coming is a response to Schubert’s song cycle Die schöne Müllerin and will be performed alongside it as part of Roderick’s concert repertoire 2017-18. The cycle will represent a contemporary female perspective in a programme and genre, otherwise dominated by male voices. An initial writing and research phase includes a workshop at Leeds University for young writers and songwriters in the region. By exploring themes of identity, gender and voice in the participant’s work we will create a dialogue between Schubert’s original cycle and song-writing today. A film documenting the creative process and recording a live performance will be released online and screened publicly. After the touring period is complete the work will be tailored for all voice types and published digitally. Crossing both genre and artistic divides, this multi-disciplinary project brings together Rommi Smith’s live literature expertise, Emily Levy’s folk and contemporary musical heritage, and Roderick Williams’ classical performance credentials in an exciting new collaboration with unique musical and lyrical perspectives.
