The Florence Nightingale Composer Residency

Little children, love one another. Remember we are not so many small selves, but members of a community. A real nurse sinks self.’ Florence Nightingale

Achieved with the support of Arts Council England, this residency is part of the Florence Nightingale School‘s unique and innovative Culture & Care programme, offered to both staff and students, which explores the role that the arts, and in particular music, can play in the professional development and education of nurses.

John’s full brief at the Florence Nightingale School is a challenging one and sees him exploring the nature of care in clinical environments through music and composing new works reflecting upon his experiences. This broad role involves observing and working with students, practicing nurses, School academics and members of the King’s College London Community, experiencing life in the hospital, meeting patients, and creating a songbook for nurses to use in children’s wards.

John’s residency has been made possible with additional funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England London.
