PRS Foundation at The Great Escape 2018

We have so much going on at The Great Escape, and we can’t wait to see you there. Our events are mostly centred around our Momentum 5 Year Anniversary, our Flash Funding live panel, and the presence of 10 Keychange participants. Thursday 17th May

4.00-5.00pm – Panel: Keychange presents…Opportunities in Independence @ The Old Courtroom

Is it easier for women to find success in the independent music industry as an artist or professional? We look at the differences independent music, from the creative freedom it offers to whether it’s a more inclusive enviroment and the positives and negatives the different set-ups can have on the artists, interns and collaborators.

This panel is presented by the PRS Foundation intiative Keychange. Keychange is a pioneering international initiative which empowers women to transform the future of music and encourages festivals to achieve a 50:50 gender balance by 2022.

Friday 18th May

12.00-2.00pm: PPL, PRS for Music and PRS Foundation present…5 Years of the Momentum Music Fund

The XCERTS ‘In Conversation’ with Huw Stephens, Momentum Music Fund report launch and keynote from Crispin Hunt at The Old Courtroom

Join PPL, PRS for Music and PRS Foundation for our “In Conversation with” series as part of The Old Courtroom Sessions:

With 4 albums neatly under their belt, a sequence of high profile support slots with the likes of Biffy Clyro, Nothing But Thieves and Manchester Orchestra and their own headline tours done and dusted, The XCERTS are one of the most exciting UK bands.

In this panel, Jordan and Murray from the rock band – renowned for its creativity – will delve into the creative process behind their records. They will open up about the challenges, creative blocks, and risks they have had to overcome as well as the impact of receiving PRS Foundation’s Momentum funding – all of which have helped them to keep producing great live shows and songs.

They will be joined by their long standing producer, Dave Eringa, and Olivia Sime from their agency ITB, who have worked with the band to help build and shape their career.

The session will be chaired by legendary BBC Radio 1 presenter Huw Stephens, who has been an influential supporter of the band from the very beginning.

The session also includes the official launch of the ‘5 Years of the Momentum Music Fund’ report, featuring speeches from PRS Foundation’s Vanessa Reed, PRS for Music’s Executive Director of Membership, International and Licensing, Paul Clements, PPL CEO, Peter Leathem and a Keynote from multi-platinum selling Songwriter and Producer, Crispin Hunt (Longpigs). Momentum Music Fund was initiated by PRS Foundation and Arts Council England. The fund was launched at The Great Escape in 2013.

2.15-3.45pm: PRS Foundation & Key Production Group Present…FLASH FUNDING FOR VINYL LIVE DECISION PANEL

In Association with Music Glue & Metropolis Studios

Flash Funding for Vinyl offers emerging UK artists and bands the opportunity to develop their careers with:

  • 500 x 12” Vinyl from Key Production Group & Modo
  • Release support from Music Glue
  • Audio Mastering from Metropolis Studios
  • Ongoing Promotional Support from Flash Funding Partners

Flash Funding for Vinyl was announced on 30th April, with artists applying by 4th May via video application. 10 artists have been shortlisted and this decision panel is made up of special guest industry experts and will give a unique insight into how funding decisions are made. The event will also be broadcast through Facebook Live on Key Production and PRS Foundation Facebook profiles.

3.30-4.30pm: Stage Managed: The future of festival line-ups and gender representation…

Brighton Dome- Founders Room

Exploring the economics of equality and who has the power to change the model.

Generator and Brighter Sound are proud to present their first collaborative industry panel which will offer varied and alternative views on gender equality in the live sector, touching upon issues of power and economy, programming vs. curation and the merits and challenges of representation targets. Most importantly it will discuss positive suggestions for tangible and realistic change.

The panel and collaboration is connected to two current programmes of work… Both Sides Now – a three-year programme to support, inspire and showcase women in music across the North of England and WeCreate – an innovative talent development project that seeks to engage with the gender equality debate in music.

Celebrate 5 years of the Momentum Music Fund with performances from some of our most exciting recent recipients.

The Momentum Music Fund is run by PRS Foundation in partnership with PPL and Creative Scotland in association with Spotify.

12:30 : Jerry Williams

Jerry Williams is officially Topshop’s Favourite New Musician. The last 12 months has seen 22 yr old Portsmouth based self-releasing Indie-pop artist achieve a growing number of serious musical landmarks, including confirming her debut at SXSW with an invite to perform at BBC Introducing’s flagship showcase at the British Music Embassy. Jerry also shone at the recent first fifty BBC Intro showcase for TGE 2018 as well as making her television debut on 4Music’s Trending Live and ITV’s Weekend shows. Jerry has been selected by Ticketmaster as one of their ‘Ones To Watch’ 2018 and has a slew of new music from her forthcoming album which she will be showcasing at her SXSW and 2018 gigs. Working with Foals and Slow Club producer Luke Smith, Lewis Capaldi and Fickle Friends producer James Earp, alongside long-time collaborator award winning producer Dan Brown.

13:30 : Sam Fender

Emerging Tyneside musician Sam Fender was a teenager when he began performing in pubs throughout town. He was spotted in a pub by Ben Howard’s manager, Owain Davies, who then got him to support for Willy Mason. Sam Fender is currently on tour, honing in his talents and perfectly his performance skills. It’s only time before he suddenly hits the radio waves.

14:30 : LIFE

LIFE’s critically acclaimed debut album ‘Popular Music’ was self-released by the band in 2017. It is an album that demands attention for itself. It created a manifesto for the disillusioned, the widely ignored and those who might think they’ve no means of having a creative outlet. In 2017 the band appeared at numerous festivals across the UK and Europe, headlined for the BBC at SXSW, toured with SLAVES, IDLES and Nadine Shah, gained playlist adds on BBC 6 Music and had relentless backing from Radio 1 including a live session at Maida Vale.

15:30 : Flohio

Flohio AKA Funmi Ohiosumah is a British Nigerian Artist from Bermondsey. Currently working on her debut EP, Flohio is already making a big impact, crossing genres through her own tracks and features with artists such as God Colony. She has previously been handpicked to support Princess Nokia, Clams Casino and Mura Masa.
