Gilles Peterson to host first official UK jazz showcase at Winter Jazzfest in New York City featuring Nubya Garcia, Oscar Jerome, The Comet Is Coming and Yazz Ahmed.

  • Gilles Peterson hosts the first PRS Foundation and BBC Music Introducing showcase at Winter Jazzfest in New York.
  • Four talented UK artists are being supported to perform at the industry showcase

PRS Foundation and BBC Music Introducing  are proud to present the best of young UK talent in their first showcase at Winter Jazzfest 2018 in New York City, USA hosted by BBC Radio 6 Music presenter, innovator and founder of Brownswood Recordings, Gilles Peterson.

A vibrant new UK jazz scene is thriving and in ascendance, fuelled by experimentation and grass root innovation. This is reflected by an eclectic line up of UK jazz artists at the international showcase: Nubya Garcia, Oscar Jerome,  The Comet Is Coming and Yazz Ahmed.

Saxophonist, composer and winner of Breakthrough Act of the Year at the 2017 Jazz FM Awards Nubya Garcia presents a thrilling brand of afro-tinged groove-based modal jazz. South London newcomer and Glastonbury Emerging Talent finalist, Oscar Jerome will showcase his deft skills as a vocalist and guitarist merging classic timeless sounds with a forward-thinking energy and lyricism. Mercury nominated cosmic psych-jazz heroes The Comet Is Coming have built somewhat of a cult following on the UK live circuit, promise a high octane performance in the spirit of space jazz behemoth Sun Ra.
From trumpet soloist and composer Yazz Ahmed, Winter Jazz fans can expect an exuberant and inventive show that boldly pushes the boundaries of jazz with a psychedelic exploration of Arabic jazz.

The showcase will take place at Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker Street on Wednesday 10 January 2018 with the doors opening at 6.00pm.

This will be the first time the PRS Foundation and BBC Music Introducing showcase has taken place

at Winter Jazzfest, the annual New York home to exciting and forward-thinking contemporary jazz music being made today.

Gilles Peterson, BBC Radio 6 Music presenter said:

“I’m honoured and excited to bringing some of the most innovative young artists coming out of the fascinating UK scene to the spiritual home of jazz – New York”

Vanessa Reed, CEO of PRS Foundation said:

“The UK jazz scene is on fire right now with exceptional young artists being recognised internationally whether at SXSW or Montreal Jazz Festival. New York’s Winter Jazzfest provided a crucial launchpad into US markets for Go Go Penguin and Shabaka and the Ancestors in recent years. Presenting a showcase of more UK artists at Winter Jazzfest is something that’s been waiting to happen and I’m proud that PRS Foundation spotted this and made it possible in collaboration with BBC Introducing, Gilles Peterson and our new partners at Winter Jazzfest. I can’t wait to see how Nubya, Oscar and Yazz use this to build their careers in the states.”

Winter JazzFest takes place from 10–17 January 2017 and you can find out more details at: http://www.winterjazzfest.com
