About New Music Incubator

New Music Incubator is a project that brings together professional new music practitioners for a period of collaborative creative research. The participants are artists who collectively employ a range of approaches to music and sound production including improvisation, composition, performance and sound art. Through two intensive residencies, the project promotes mutual professional development, skill sharing and the development of networks for future projects.

The project model was originally devised by established Swedish composer, Martin Q Larsson, who approached PRS for Music Foundation in 2009 to develop New Music Incubator, an international strand of his Swedish-based Networking Camp. This built on our mutual involvement in the pan-European Re:New network, which exchanges repertoire between twelve European composer societies/collecting societies.

In 2010 the first New Music Incubator took place featuring twenty practitioners from the UK and Sweden. Residencies took place on the island of Saltögården in Sweden and Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, UK. Jointly leading the residencies were Martin Q Larsson and sound artist and composer, Jan Hendrickse, from the UK. We are currently halfway through the second edition of New Music Incubator, which features twenty new participants from the UK and Sweden and residencies at Brunel University, London and Acusticum, in Piteå in Northern Sweden.

New Music Incubator is a partnership between PRS for Music Foundation, Swedish Music Information Centre and Swedish Society of Composers.
