South West Music School

South West Music School has become the fourth recipient of our David Bedford Music Education Award for their Keith Tippett commission project.

This project sees Keith write a piece for the 40 young musicians with exceptional talent and potential from South West Music School (SWMS) Core Programme. This commission will form the central part of a 4 day residency in July 2013 with the young musicians developing their skills in contemporary music performance and spontaneous composition.

Keith will lead a team of contemporary jazz professionals who will facilitate rehearsals and the development of the spontaneous sections through creative workshops. The residency will culminate in a public performance of the commissioned work alongside other works by Keith Tippett.

Speaking of receiving this special award in recognition of the excellent music education work for young people, Lisa Tregale from SWMS told us:

“This is fantastic news and a real honour. I had the great pleasure in working with David during my career and he was a big support for South West Music School at the beginning of our life. He was a huge advocate for music education and especially in the South West region.  It is also very poignant as David Bedford and Keith Tippett were great friends and colleagues and both had strong connections with Bristol.”
