Abimaro Gunnell: Women Make Music
Abimaro & The Free are Abimaro Suit (Lead Vocals), James Beatt (Bassist & Vocals) and Alex Montaque (Keys & Vocals). The trio seek to make music that comments on and challenges the culture that surrounds them, and strives to express something deeper. Confronting issues to do with image, identity, spirituality and youth culture, they are set on making our voice heard, and commenting loudly on all that surrounds them, fiercely showing how life inspires art. Currently performing as a trio, Abimaro has sung lead vocals on the third leg of Zero7’s most recent World Tour, James has toured with the MOBO-award-nominees Four Corners, and Alex, who studied music at the highly regarded Brit School has played for artists such as Rihanna.
With this project, the focus is on other, less publicised issues that effect, shape and inspire women. The universal subject of a woman and her relationships is what Abimaro & The Free are addressing: the relationship a woman has with her mother, rather than her shoes; the relationship a woman has with her sister, rather than her toy boy; the relationship a woman has with her father, rather than her diet. All music will be co-written by Abimaro Gunnell, James Beatt and Alex Montaque. A body of five songs all connected by the theme of female relationships and brought together under the title track of ‘Miranda’ commenting on the immensely important relationship between a daughter and her mother. The aim is to attempt to creatively explore the relationships that shape a woman, and offer women a chance to relate to a story that comments on something other than their sexuality.
