Integrating aspects of live concert, immersive theatre performance, dance piece, digital media show and art event, “Arboles Lloran por Lluvia” is the debut production by award-winning guitarist/composer Alex Roth.
Based on a suite of medieval Sephardic folk ballads released by his 10-piece electro-acoustic chamber ensemble Sefiroth (who perform live), the piece weaves the songs’ intensely poetic Ladino lyrics into an epic narrative, telling ancient but still poignant stories of love, loss, yearning, migration and defiance.
Drawing on symbolism from the Kabbalist tree of life, five dancers represent both the characters in the songs and the manifestations of the divine according to Sephardic lore. With an innovative stage design using film projection and interactive lighting, “Arboles” creates a world in which ancient myths co-exist with utterly contemporary artistic practices.
