Apples and Snakes: The Open Fund for Organisations
As global temperatures rise, the quality and quantity of our crops decreases. In the not-so- distant future, coffee bean production will halt, caffeine will become extinct, and by 2050 there will be no more chocolate.
Step forward in time and enter Cece’s, an underground speakeasy where words and jazz collide. Indulge in the forbidden delights of an espresso martini or devour a hot chocolate whilst taking in the live entertainment.
Cece’s is an immersive poetic experience where leading spoken word artists and jazz musicians collaborate to create work, exploring hope and action during the climate emergency.
Musical Director Eric Appapoulay is a singer, songwriter, composer, arranger, programmer, multi-instrumentalist and guitarist. Appapoulay has been the guitar player for Neneh Cherry, musical director for Daniel Bedingfield, the bassist for both Plan B and Nitin Sawhney, and guitarist with Yusuf Islam. Born in East London to Mauritian parents he began playing (sega) traditional music from Mauritius at age eight alongside reggae, calypso, soca and high life.
Artistic Director Zena Edwards is a poet, performer and climate activist who uses song, movement and global influences as a jump-off for her words. She defines the fusion of poetry and music by including traditional African-instrumentation (the Kalimba and Kora) and new technology to create soundtracks for her poems and stories, producing a body of work that reaches culturally and generationally diverse audiences on an international level.
Produced by Apples and Snakes, England’s leading spoken word organisation, in partnership with UK jazz taste makers, Jazz re:freshed.
