New Moves for the Movement by Jay Capperauld: Beyond Borders
New Moves for the Movement takes an exciting and atmospheric new work for brass quintet and brass band by young Scottish composer Jay Capperauld to the brass hotspots of Manchester, Cardiff and Dublin very soon after its first performance at Sir James Macmillan’s Cumnock Tryst. The British Brass Band is a cultural phenomenon which produces some of the highest performing standards found on these islands and is a vibrant world-wide musical export. The competitive element of band contests has contributed to these transcendental performing standards, but this project is totally different in that it glories in the artistic and aesthetic qualities of brass instruments played together in harmony. To the standard brass band (cornets, tenor and baritone horns, trombones, euphoniums, basses and percussion) will be added the distinctively different tone colours of symphonic brass (two trumpets, French horn, trombone and tuba), spread antiphonally above and behind the band.
