Big Joanie: PPL Momentum Grantee
Big Joanie’s Second Album.
Big Joanie are a Black feminist punk band. The band formed in the heart of London’s DIY punk scene in 2013 to play at First Timers (a gig where each band plays their set for the very first time), and is a space where its members (singer/guitarist Stephanie Phillips, drummer Chardine Taylor-Stone, and bassist Estella Adeyeri) can be completely themselves as Black women.
In June 2018 Big Joanie were spotted playing live by Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth and his partner Eva Prinz, who by the following morning had created a record label specifically to sign the band and release their debut album, ‘Sistahs’. They have since also been signed by US record label Kill Rock Stars, home of many of the riot grrrl acts who inspired Big Joanie to make music. They have toured the UK and Europe extensively, receiving features in Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and the Guardian alongside radio play on BBC 6 Music and KEXP.
After delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, Big Joanie are now set to launch their highly anticipated follow-up to ‘Sistahs’ in 2022. The band are delighted to be recipients of the PRS Foundation’s PPL Momentum funding, which will be used to promote their new music and powerful messaging to the world.
