The Brass Band Heritage Trust was established in 1996 to ‘preserve the past, promote the present and foster the future’ of the band movement’. The work of the Trust is focused on the development of the skills and experience of young brass band musicians and the furthering of creative opportunities for aspiring composers. Between 1997 and 2002 the BBHT worked in partnership with the instrument manufacturer Boosey & Hawkes in the National Youth Brass Band Championships, providing masterclasses and workshops for two years, before taking on the management of the event.
The BBHT is also an active commissioner of new brass band works, from established and aspirant composers. The most recent recipients of BBHT grants have been composers Gavin Higgins and Simon Dobson, the latter for his new trombone concerto SHIFT, premiered at the 2012 RNCM Festival of Brass by Peter Moore. A number of BBHT commissions have become well established as contest or concert pieces for youth, community and elite brass bands. The Trust also continues to support creative and performances workshops, principally at the RNCM Festival of Brass.
The Brass Band Heritage Trust have been awarded funding by PRS For Music Foundaiton.
