Disco…with a ‘hint of warmth, funk and embracing attitude, but from a present day, slightly worried perspective.’
That’s what Graham Fitkin will be creating for Cheltenham, Swansea and Glasgow in his new work Disco.
Cheltenham Music Festival, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and Swansea Festival of Music and the Arts each have a strong relationship with Graham as both a composer and performer. Support from Beyond Borders has enabled the partners to commission Graham to write this disco-inspired work for the Fitkin Ensemble’s line-up of piano, harps, percussion, saxophones, trumpet, guitar and bass – plus vocals.
The project will create a genuinely organic re-incorporation of popular culture into classical music, and develop further the in-the-cracks, genre-bending nature of the Fitkin Ensemble.
In Graham’s words: “I want to create an antidote to the listener apathy which the sad decline of disco from its funky, liberal heyday has charted. By deconstructing elements of disco and realigning them within my own quite rigorous application of structure and time-frames, I want to create a liberated work, with a hint of warmth, funk and embracing attitude, but from a present day, slightly worried perspective. With a mirror ball.”
