Chiedu Oraka: PPL Momentum Music Fund

Misfits

A leading figure in the Northern Rap and Grime scene, Chiedu Oraka, aka ‘The Black Yorkshireman’ defies genres with his blend of raw honesty and social poetry.

Raised in a North-Hull estate, Oraka creates an in-depth memoir of the Northern Black experience through his strong lyrical abilities, his releases from ‘Men Behaving Badly’ through to ‘Flex’ and ‘Darcy’ attracting attention from Sian Anderson and Annie Mac through to Charlie Sloth and Sir Spyro with his highest performing single, ‘Darcy’ achieving 3 million+ streams and sitting on Spotify’s Grime Shutdown for over 300 days (8th longest on playlist).

The Momentum Fund will be directly supporting Oraka’s forthcoming 10 -track ‘Misfits’ mixtape project, a significant body of work that represents a pivotal moment in Chiedu’s music career. The mixtape’s title, ‘Misfits’ represents Chiedu’s life as an outsider and celebrates the differences that make people unique. It also highlights the under-representation of Northern Black artists in the mainstream music industry and aims to advocate for and represent Black creators who do not fit the conventional mould. The Momentum Fund will enable Chiedu to mix/master the project, receive PR and radio support, as well as marketing and content creation.
