The co-commission between NI Opera and the Southbank Centre will showcase NI Opera Shorts and the talents of Northern Irish composers and writers to a wider audience. It will also give the singers the opportunity to perform at a prestigious venue, which is particularly important for the members of our Young Artists’ Programme who will be making their debut with the company. The inclusion of NI Opera Shorts in the weekend will raise the profile of Northern Ireland’s national opera company, and help fulfil our remit of touring outside the province and showcasing the best local talent.

The Southbank centre is one of the largest arts centres in the world – few companies from Northern Ireland have showcased their work at the venue and their ethos of collaboration with young and emerging talent is aligned with NI Opera’s mission. The company’s London debut was a sold out run of Orpheus in the Underworld at the Young Vic in November 2011, and the performance in July will build on this success. The composers were chosen because of their passion for new music that embodies contemporary themes, and their previous work also played and crucial part in the selection process.
