Cryptic: Beyond Borders
Touring the UK in February 2016 and beyond with the support of PRS Foundation and Beyond Borders, Oscillon Response, created by composer and visual artist Mark Lyken, musically interprets the forefather of Electronic Art, Ben F Laposky’s pioneering “Oscillon” Electronic Abstractions. Working in collaboration with Sanford Museum, Iowa Lyken created this Cryptic commission for Sonica 2015, merging sonic responses and visualisations with Laposky’s ground-breaking 1950’s art works.
Responding to a selection of six strikingly different photographic works capturing complex, rhythmic waveforms, not only are Laposky’s images a visual inspiration for Lyken’s compositions but the original process behind the creation of the artworks has been utilised to generate the accompanying visuals for the performance.
Mark Lyken is a composer and visual artist based in Glasgow, who creates musical and sound works, film, paintings and installations. Lyken’s work is inspired by the relationship between nature, culture and technology and the ways in which digital existence may be reconciled with the “soul” of analogue mediums. A desire for a more physical connection with his audio work has led a move away from computer based composition and a return to hardware equipment with a focus on live performance.
