Dominique Le Gendre: The Composers’ Fund

The award from the PRS Foundation’s Composer’s Fund will allow Dominique to re-visit a selection of her works, build partnerships with ensembles and venues and steadily build towards a performance of these works. Collaborating with her typesetter, scores and parts will be prepared for a showcase presentation when the possibility of live performance to audiences returns.

Composer and creative producer, Dominique has written music across a wide range of media: from the award-winning radio adaptation of Grace Nicholls’ poem, I Is a Long Memoried Woman to art installations, via theatre with the recent critically acclaimed production of The Tragedy of Richard II directed by Adjoa Andoh and Lynette Linton, and including opera, music-theatre, chamber music, dance, art-house film, television and sound poems. The breadth of her musical language can be heard in the music she composed and produced for all 38 Shakespeare plays in the Complete Arkangel Shakespeare CD collection. She is a former Associate Artist of the Royal Opera House and Manning Camerata which commissioned her operas Bird of Night and The Burial at Thebes.

Trained as a classical guitarist in Paris, France with Ramon de Herrera, Dominique was born and brought up in Trinidad’s rich cultural delta that moves seamlessly between the languages and musical genres of the Americas, Africa, Europe and India. Her music infuses folk elements and classical form with her own unique language and inventive orchestration.

She is the co-founder and artistic director of the arts charity, StrongBack Productions.
