Ella Jarman-Pinto: Women Make Music

Exploring The Lost Voices Of Extraordinary Women Throughout History

Ella is a critically acclaimed composer, described as ‘one of the UK’s most exciting music-makers’ by Classic FM in 2020. In 2021 Ella received BBC Radio 3’s flagship commission for International Women’s Day and worked with poet Jo Brandon to create ‘Plango: A Cure Lament’. BBC R3 Producer Olwen Fisher said of the music: ‘It is a piece of such power and beauty that it took my breath away.’

This album is an opportunity for Ella and Jo to explore a snapshot of the ideas that they have been inspired by over the years. These include personal experiences of motherhood, love, grief and hope, as well as those of lesser-known extraordinary women, including: 17th-century openly bisexual, sword-fighting opera singer, ‘La Maupin’ (Julie d’Aubigny); 14th century mystic, Margery Kempe; 18th century Mary Toft who was said to have given birth to a litter of rabbits; Suffragette, displaced Princess and God-daughter to Queen Victoria, Sophia Duleep Singh; and Haitian pirate, “Back From The Dead Red”, Jacquotte Delahaye.
