Folk Alliance 2016 - Lady Maisery
Lady Maisery are an English female vocal trio pushing the boundaries of traditional vocal harmony to a new level, forged from the voices of three of the UK’s most innovative young performers, Hannah James, Hazel Askew and Rowan Rheingans.
Interpreting traditional and contemporary folk songs, ranging from the intimacy of three voices in harmony, to a full band sound of accordion, fiddle, harp, banjo and Hannah’s award winning clog dancing and foot percussion. Also breaking new ground as one of the first UK groups to explore the tradition of didlding or tune singing, which has nearly died out in England, but is still prevalent in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe. Lady Maisery aim to create striking music, telling stories that need to be heard, often with social, political and feminist resonances.
Lady Maisery have received 5-star reviews from publications as diverse as the Financial Times and Songlines Magazine, been nominated for a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award, appeared on Radio 4‘s Woman’s Hour and rated top of Radio 3‘s Late Junction albums of the summer. The help of PRSF will enable us to travel to the Folk Alliance International conference, which will bring our music to a much wider audience. Singing is universal, and we’ve found that harmony is accessible to people with all different musical interests, wherever they are from. Meeting people from across the world at FAI will help us sing to more people, and a more diverse audience, than ever before.
