Gregory Emfietzis’ music makes drama out of the psychology and ritual of public performance. Reaching far beyond sound alone it embraces staging, lighting, dramaturgy, costume design and more. Emfietzis was born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1980. He studied Music Science and Art at the University of Macedonia before moving to the UK in 2004, to study composition with Christopher Fox at Huddersfield University (2004–5) and with Fox, Richard Barrett and Jennifer Walshe at Brunel University (2007–12). His music has been performed by leading ensembles across Europe and North America. In 2013, his quintet Fear (not) was performed by members of the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras, and his opera The Darkness of Mistico was produced by the Greek National Opera House. In 2014, a new work will be performed by the London Symphony Orchestra.
The funding was used to help me with the cost of attending the rehearsals and premiere of my opera The Darkness of Mistico at the Greek National Opera House, Athens (29-30/6). This was an amazing experience for me; due to the nature of opera, the number of people working and the efforts and synchronisation required from everyone involved has been an extremely valuable lesson for any relevant future engagements. Furthermore, I had the chance to meet a number of important people that could potentially lead to further engagements with the organisation.
