Hannah Kendall: Women Make Music

A chamber opera in one act, ‘The Knife of Dawn’ is based on the compelling story of Guyanese political activist and poet Martin Carter, set in his prison cell towards the end of a month-long hunger strike in 1953. He was incarcerated without charge, fighting for, in his own words, ‘…liberation from a foreign country’. Great Britain.Carter is considered one of the leading Caribbean writers, and four of his own incredibly lyrical and evocative poems will be drawn together by Tessa McWatt’s new libretto. Baritone Peter Brathwaite, described as ‘…the next big thing in modern opera’ by Shortlist Magazine, will perform the role of Carter, directed by John Walton. Premiere performances will take place during Black History Month in October 2016.
