‘Xenolalia’ – adventures in collaboration & communication for 5 ensembles
/ˌziːnəˈ ˌzɛ-, -noʊ-/ (laliā́)
Ancient Greek: ξένος, romanized: xénos, meaning “stranger” and λαλιά (laliá) meaning “speech” or “talk”.
Nineteen years & four studio albums after their initial formation at Glastonbury 2002, the band has cohabited with various members & ever-changing musical wavelengths to showcase their avant-garde, edge-pushing creativity.
As a consequence, it comes as no surprise that the band have taken a path into the unknown, completely disregarding the boundaries and expectations we have for artists with this project, instead choosing to follow their own creative instincts and deliver to us a truly unique concept.
‘Xenolalia’ is a experiment in composition, collaboration & production, challenging core band members & satellite musicians to stay adventurous in the creation of 55 pieces of music for 5 ensembles : Strings, Electric, A Cappella, Horns & Electronica.
Drawing on a body of 11 songs about human communication, each song is reimagined 5 ways, playing with instrumentation & ideas of interpretation, perception, context, subtext & dialogue, & built around musical & lyrical exchange.
The band have been so fortunate to be working with experimental composer Bec Plexus (NL), Nashville’s virtuoso fiddler Ross Holmes, BBC folk singer of the year Ríoghnach Connolly, Stopgap Dance Company and artists including Blythe Pepino, (Mesadorm), Faye Houston, Charlotte Glasson, La Leif, Falle Nioke, Alabaster Deplume, Donna Thompson, Kassia Zermon & Wallis Bird.
