Supported by Counterpoints Arts, New Writing North and Northumbria University. Exploring the role of the telephone in experiences of exile, Voice Notes celebrates the voices of those who have experienced forced displacement. A collaboration between composer/performer Hardi Kurda, poet Sarah Jackson and refugee arts charity Compass Collective, this piece features telephone messages written and recorded by refugees and migrants. Listeners are immersed in stories and sounds of home and belonging, landscape and loss.

Hardi Kurda is a London-based composer, performer and founder of SPACE21 for experimental music in Slemani, Iraqi Kurdistan. His work involves unusual sounds and unexpected moments. He often uses the radio to explore spectrum frequency as sound material and to interact with the audience to reflect on his illegal journey to Europe and question the concept of legality. He has been commissioned by Another Sky, Shubbak Festival and Beyond1932 (London), as well as Melos Collective (Vilnius) and more. His works have been performed at Sonorities (Belfast), Borderline (Athens), ADK (Berlin), Irtijal (Beirut) and more.

Sarah Jackson is a writer and curator. Winner of the Seamus Heaney Prize for Poetry and BBC New Generation Thinker, she is a Vice Chancellor’s Fellow at Northumbria University.

Compass Collective is a charity that assists unaccompanied minor refugees and young people seeking asylum to build resilience and integrate into the UK through creative programmes.

Another Sky is a new London-based festival celebrating experimental music from the SWANA (South West Asia/North Africa) region and diaspora. We present composed, improvised and electronic music, short films and moving-image works, new commissions, workshops and an independent label & publisher fair.

Voice Notes (Nottingham Trent University, 2023-2024) was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
