Jill Jarman: The Open Fund for Music Creators
The ringing of bells has meant many things to people for centuries: the call to meditate and worship, a marking of time, an alarm for danger, the joy of marriage, the sorrow of death. Jill Jarman’s new piece for internationally renowned percussionist Evelyn Glennie with viols and voices examines the call of bells pealing across centuries of human experience. The composition is split into four sections and frames a concert program which explores the meaning and social aspects of ringing bells, as well as their actual sound, to allow the listener to reflect on their own memories of the language of bells. Throughout these sections, Jarman uses the forces to recreate the sounds and meaning of bells, using the concepts of resonance and reflection in this immersive and atmospheric concert.
Jill Jarman is a composer and jazz pianist, whose music reflects diverse genres, effortlessly crossing the boundaries between classical and jazz.
Jarman’s works have been performed at many renowned concert halls and festivals, and her works (including Mindstream, Echoes from the Birdcage) have been performed by some of the UK’s leading musicians, such as Evelyn Glennie, Hugo Ticciati and the O/Modernt Chamber Orchestra.
Jarman is currently writing a double concerto in her Across the divide series, which brings ‘background’ instruments forward as soloists – the first work in the series is due to be premiered in 2021 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall (Southbank Centre) by Evelyn Glennie, double bassist Chi-Chi Nwanoku and the Chineke! Orchestra.
