Jo Hamilton: Women Make Music
Jo Hamilton’s debut Gown has quietly seen the Scotland-raised “observer” attract nearly 70,000 Facebook fans and wide acclaim from the UK press (“Singular and unforgettable, Hamilton is quite a discovery.” The Guardian).
With an incomparable ability to move people live, Jo’s music embodies a sense of deep appreciation for the everyday world. She has performed live on the main stage at TEDGlobal and to over 3 million people live on the BBC World Service. In 2013 Prince opened several shows on his world tour with a cover of Jo’s song “Liathach”.
Brass: Durham International Festival (http://www.brassfestival.co.uk) has commissioned Jo to create an iconic live show in Durham Cathedral as the centrepiece for BRASS 2014, and to serve as the launch show for Jo’s second album.
The new compositions will explore the theme of perspective; that our lives continually repeat the same patterns in different contexts, and on different scales. They will be presented live in the cathedral by Jo and a military brass band, in arrangements specially tailored to the acoustics.
Accompanying the music will be sonic treatments and visual effects which together will play with the audience’s preconceived notions of the scale of a cathedral, giving them a variety of different perspectives on the space they are in.
