Jo Quail: Women Make Music
Globally recognised for her incendiary live concerts, Jo’s music appeals across multiple genres. As a soloist Jo has performed in settings as diverse as St James’s Palace, Hellfest (FR), the Queen Elizabeth Hall for Robert Smith’s Meltdown Festival, and the Melbourne Recital Centre. She tours extensively across the EU and Australia, sharing stages with the likes of Amenra, Caspian, Myrkur, and MONO among others, whilst also arranging and performing her own works with traditional choirs and orchestras including Cappella Gedanensis (PL). “Her performance is mesmerising, as every possible ounce of creative potential is extracted from the cello, both in terms of melodic drama and viciously distorted cacophonies of volume.” – Drowned in Sound – Meltdown Festival
‘The Cartographer’ is a new composition by UK cellist and composer Jo Quail. Commissioned by the prestigious Roadburn Festival, this work marries traditional classical instrumentation with the concept of heaviness in contemporary metal genres, exploring beyond volume, through musical sigils, instrumentation, harmonic structure, textural and timbral juxtaposition.‘The Cartographer’, scored for 8 trombones, piano, 2 percussionists, violin, electric cello and two vocalists, builds upon and develops the amalgamation of Jo’s sonic worlds ever further.
“She makes extraordinary music that defies classification” – Prog Magazine
