Karine Polwart & Pippa Murphy: Women Make Music

The birth and death of stars. The oldest lighthouse in Scotland. And the epic migration of Arctic Terns, who see more sunlight each year than any other creature on Earth. Folk-singer, songwriter and storyteller, Karine Polwart, and composer and sound designer Pippa Murphy collaborate on a wide-eyed and wondering new six-part podcast series that explores the science, culture and symbolism of light through story, song, soundscape and original composition for piano and strings.

As a creative partnership, Polwart and Murphy have produced acclaimed work together for Edinburgh International Festival, Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh International Book Festival, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, Celtic Connections Festival and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

In 2017, their score for Polwart’s theatre show, Wind Resistance, won Best Music and Sound at the Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland. The accompanying album, Pocket of Wind Resistance was shortlisted for Scottish Album of the Year and Radio 2 Folk Awards Album of the Year, and won a New Music in Scotland Award for Innovation.

Karine and Pippa will develop their existing composition, sound design, storytelling and production skills for podcasting, with mentoring and support from the ARIA, Lovie and British Podcast Award winning team at Folk on Foot. Polwart and Murphy are currently commissioned jointly as Artists in Residence at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, and by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
