KEHINA: Women Make Music
The project title, ‘I wish I was here’ is a play on words, designed to portray how often when I’m in situations my mind wonders above them instead of actually being in the moment. There will be times when I’m even aware it’s happening whilst simultaneously living that moment. it’s not just something I realise in retrospection. So each song in this EP is a different shade of that emotion. All to say that in these moments I tend to feel so singular but in actuality, it’s literally one of the most common symptoms of human experience… Literally just a year in the life. But instead of focusing on an external drama that is so often referred to with RnB music, this EP is very much an internal clash that affects how I react to everything externally.
Born and raised in London, of Algerian, Sudanese and Turkish descent, Kehina is truly a child of the world. She uses these influences to break through musical borders and genres and define new ones on her own terms. Growing up music was always playing, so much so that her first words were actually first notes. Her love of Rnb and Soul was passed down to her by her father, through artists like Lauryn Hill, Marvin Gaye, Corinne Bailey Rae and Gil Scott-Heron. On her mother’s side, a taste for Blues and 70’s French pop by artists Francoise Hardy and Joe Dassin was equally instilled. This eclectic musical upbringing carved out Kehina’s unique sound.
