Chinatown Arts Space presents XX/XY, a new musical battle composed by Liz Liew and Andy Leung, inspired by the competition of life – from the battle of the sexes (female XX/male XY chromosomes) to the competitive spirit of the Olympics and Paralympics: victories and defeats, human and machine, beginning and end, the UK and the world. Exploring diverse London sounds, they want to celebrate the contemporary British Chinese multicultural heritage that has shaped them as international composers. For the Chinese, XX/XY is the Yin/Yang. Working with Bernie Gardner and urban youth junk bands, Liz and Andy’s musical battle reflects contrasting themes: female/male, traditional instruments/experimental electronica, British/world culture.
