Low Island: Momentum
Oxford-based Low Island is the collaboration between DJ/Producers Jamie Jay & Carlos Posada, bassist Jacob Lively, and jazz drummer Felix Higginbottom. Fearless in their stylistic diversity, they are truly creatures of the 21st century, seeing no contradiction in slipping between uplifting electronica and intimate ballads – or merging the two. It was a step that was both deliberate and natural. “There was a euphoria and excitement we didn’t always get from indie gigs, but a connection to the songs and musicians we felt was missing from club nights.”
Over the last three years they have released four EPs, championed by 6music’s Lauren Laverne and Tom Robinson, as well as BBC Introducing’s Huw Stephens. It has seen them take to the main stages at Wilderness, Lost Village and Kendal Calling, with standout performances at Glastonbury, Latitude and Reading and Leeds. European neighbours have started to take notice too, with the band becoming regular fixtures on German and Austrian radio, performing at Lollapalooza Berlin, Open Air Zurich and Reeperbahn.
Their self-produced music videos, exploring issues as wide as loneliness, masculinity and the claustrophobia of urban life, have been lauded by The Independent and Crack Magazine, whilst their ongoing collaborations in fashion, theatre and dance were captured in a documentary by DIY magazine.
With their self-produced debut album completed under lockdown, and set for release in 2021, Low Island have an incredibly bright future ahead. The invaluable support from Momentum will enable them to market the record to the highest possible standard.
