After moving from my native Pembrokeshire to study at Salford University, intending to become a session guitarist, the encouragement of composer Joe Duddell led to composition becoming my sole focus. Following this I did a masters degree at Merton College, Oxford and am now working toward a doctorate at Christ Church under the guidance of Robert Saxton and Jonathan Cross, supported by an AHRC/Christ Church Scholarship. I was also immensely fortunate to have Steve Martland as something of a mentor over the last few years.

I am immensely grateful to the Bliss Trust for endorsing my coming studies as a visiting student at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Copenhagen whilst I put my studies in Oxford aside for a year. Time spent in such a rich and dynamic musical environment will undoubtedly have an enormously positive effect upon my life in music and present many new opportunities. Whilst there I will work under the composer Hans Abrahamsen and continue my research into the intersection of popular and classical styles surrounding socially- and politically-active British composers and their/the changing notion of ‘the establishment’ in the 1980s/90s.
