Manchester Collective: The Open Fund for Organisations
Manchester Collective is so excited to present a newly-commissioned work for string orchestra by British-American composer, Freya Waley-Cohen. Freya’s new piece is inspired by the poetry of Rebecca Tamas, a York-based artist who writes about civil rights issues, nature, and politics – chiefly through a feminist lens. The work explores themes of connection and isolation – particularly resonant during 2020 – and is perfectly suited to Manchester Collective’s virtuosic musicianship and daring, rule-breaking approach. Freya’s work will be performed and recorded by the Collective in early 2021, to be released on the Icelandic label Bedroom Community later in the year.
Manchester Collective are redefining the way people experience classical music. Known for their experimental programming and daring collaborations, the work of the Collective has expanded at breakneck speed since their formation in 2016. They now play in concert halls, warehouses and factory spaces in 18 cities across the UK and Europe, performing a combination of cutting-edge contemporary music, classical masterpieces, and staged theatrical work to a hungry, new audience. The collective comments “We create intimate and intense human experiences, built around live music, for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned concert-goer, or if it’s your first time. All are welcome. From the concert hall to the factory, the recital room to the mill, the only thing we ask of you is that you open your ears and let yourself listen. Really listen. And in return, we will create something extraordinary.”
