HORSE: Matthew Herbert x LCO
‘Horse’ is a journey from the furthest acoustic origins of music to today’s revolutionary electronics. With an exploration of rhythm at its heart, it will demonstrate, through the choice of sounds, the story of music from its distant origins in the form of bone flutes similar to the oldest musical instrument, via more traditional musical instruments (performed by the London Contemporary Orchestra) to cutting edge electronics and sampling. The live show will be theatrical utilising the orchestra outside of their traditional roles. It will also feature newly commissioned electronic instruments from engineers at the forefront of the UK’s experimental maker scene.
Matthew Herbert is a prolific composer, artist and producer whose range of innovative works extends from more than 30 albums (including the much-celebrated Bodily Functions) to Ivor Novello nominated (Life in a Day) and Oscar winning (A Fantastic Woman) film scores, as well as music for the theatre, award winning TV scores (Noughts & Crosses, The Beast Must Die), video games and radio. He has performed thousands of times solo, as a DJ and with various musicians including his own big band all round the world from the Sydney Opera House, to the Hollywood Bowl. He has produced artists such as Mica Levi, Eska, The Invisible, Roisin Murphy and remixed more than 300 artists including Quincy Jones, Serge Gainsbourg and Ennio Morricone. He is a longstanding collaborator of Bjorks. Matthew has been commissioned to write new works for ensembles including London Sinfonietta, the LCO, Deutsches Kammerorchester and Stargaze.
