Megan Steinberg: The Open Fund for Music Creators

Megan Steinberg is an experimental composer and abstract turntablist. She works with found sound, chance, graphic & text scores, quietness and microtonality. Her work looks at putting accessibility at the start of creative process. Megan is studying a PhD at Royal Northern College of Music, where she has been appointed the Lucy Hale Doctoral Composer in Association with Drake Music. She has composed for performers including Kathryn Williams, Heather Roche, Juice Vocal Ensemble, Distractfold, Apartment House and Lore Lixenberg. In 2016, she was awarded the FI Williams Prize for Composition. In 2023, she was appointed Composer-in-Residence at CoMA London.
Megan will be using her Open Fund for Music Creators grant to record her debut album ‘ami études’ for Accessible Musical Instruments and disabled and neurodivergent performers: Morwenna Louttit-Vermaat (Rainbow Harp), Steve Varden (Synthesizer) and Kris Halpin (MiMu gloves). The album explores disability through experimentation and places accessibility at the start of the creative process. The pieces will use new technologies and alternative ways of creating music for disability and difference.
