Jagara: Momentum
North London-born indie electronic sister trio JAGARA released their breakout single, the politically-charged anthem ‘Let Me Go’, last October to critical acclaim. Supporting Bastille on their UK tour, they performed at London’s O2 arena, subsequently signing to booking agents Coda, and winning a whole new fanbase. Their wide range of influences is a hybrid of 80s electronica, dream rock, electronic pop/soul and hip hop, drawing from artists such as Debbie Harry, Grimes, Solange, Childish Gambino and Warpaint, as well as film soundtracks and world music elements.
They work from their makeshift family home studio where Ruth has developed her production skills since studying Music Technology, after a short stint as guitarist in a punk band. They started as an acoustic trio, having jammed together and harmonised since they were kids. They brought in their love of electronic and sampled beats, synth sounds, vocal harmonies, and genre-bending influences, which led them to create their distinctive new sound. Cat and Jane experimented on Ableton, before they all started co-producing their songs. Ruth and Cat have also branched out into DJing. Live, lead singer Jane gives an electrifying performance, and they are all dynamic multi-instrumentalists, joined by ‘honorary brother’ Joel on drums.
The band have just released their much-anticipated new single, ‘Real Love’. A beautifully-crafted epic anti-ballad, driven by hypnotic beats reminiscent of Dev Hynes, with a nostalgia-inducing riff and a contagious melody, it establishes them as a band to watch out for. Their debut EP is due for release in September.
